    Clark Highsmith

eBook (Alacrity Press, March 18, 2015)
World War II was one of the most complex events in history, the consequences of which are still being felt today. Believing that one of the best ways to learn history is through biography, Famous Men of the Second World War tells the story of the war through the lives of 31 men, investigating prominent individuals such as George Patton and Winston Churchill, as well as lesser-known individuals, scubas Carl Mannerheim and Chiang Kai-shek. The contribution of women to the war effort is also emphasized.Famous Men of the Second World War covers D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and other high-profile events, as well as topics often overlooked in World War II texts, giving insight into the important roles of China, Russia’s Winter War with Finland, the rescue of thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust and the epic clash between Germany and the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front. • True Stories of the Second World War

    Paul Dowswell

    Paperback (Scholastic, March 15, 2003)
True Stories of the Second World War is a collection of short stories about some of the events of World War II and the people involved. This is a paperback book of about 170 pages. Each story in this collection covers a different perspective of the war. Some of the topics include the battleship Bismarck, women aviators in the Soviet Air Force, the Nazis involved in the "final solution", British spies, and the development of the atomic bomb and its use by the United States to end the war. All of the stories are fairly short, running from 10 to 20 pages or so, enough to develop the main theme without too much detail. Sections at the beginning and end discuss the start and end of the war, providing a background to reference the stories against. One strength of this book is that the stories are often sprinkled with first-person memories of the people associated with the story. This aspect helps one to grasp the impact of those troubled times on the people involved in the conflict. It includes stories that will be familiar to historians, but are probably unknown in the current era. Any reader interested in learning more about the Second World War will find this book a quick primer that covers a wide variety of topics in clear and simple language. The stories are real, and the first-person perspective increases their interest to the reader.

  • Godeater: The Second World

    Melody Klink

    eBook (, March 21, 2016)
Strange things happen in the dark...In a world void of divinity, there is little to believe in. The gods and heroes of mythology have all disappeared, their stories lost to the ages. So few know the truth…Naika Connors leads a quiet, normal life—at least, as quiet and normal as a welder and shape-shifting girl can. Naika was born with The Call—a primal instinct that causes her body to transform into that of a polar bear when in distress— a condition that has sometimes been the bane of her existence, and one that's been absent in human culture for centuries. When a mysterious force robs the Earth of all sunlight, Naika must team up with her best friend, Noah Humphreys, and an unwilling boy from her past, Sirus Vick, to determine the cause. Their little North Dakota town is turned upside down as mythological beings of every sort crawl off the forgotten pages of history and into their lives. One monster rules above the rest— one that threatens the very existence of the world: the Godeater. Will they be able to save the lights of the cosmos? Are all of the gods truly gone?Melody Klink's debut novel, Godeater: The Second World, roars to life with out-of-this-world imagery, larger-than-life characters, and a mythological behemoth that just won't quit. How do you defeat that which defeats immortality?
